A listening instrument for sound
and the nervous system

Every note you hear is secretly a chord: a stack of harmonics that gives a trumpet and a clarinet their different characters. The human voice can split a note into those component harmonics the way a prism splits white light into color. When I practice this, I experience profound, meditative relaxation. Sound traditions have claimed effects like this for centuries, but the claims have rarely been made visible. I want to build the instrument that makes them visible.

It’s called the Resonance Mirror, because it reflects what’s happening inside the body while resonant frequencies sound.

The experiment is a ladder of complexity: a single tuning fork, then stacked fork harmonies, then the human voice. At each rung we measure the listener through heart rate variability, heart rate, and breath from one chest sensor, layering in EEG for brain activity, all aligned on one clock.

The second experiment: HRV biofeedback shows that watching your own physiology settle helps it settle. So we run the same tone eyes closed versus watching the mirror. If watching deepens the calm, the mirror is not just observing the state, it is participating in it: a contemplative practice tool, not only a measurement one.

Use cases

Today, the mirror listens. Foundation models let us describe a sound and a nervous system in the same mathematical language. An audio model captures what a tone actually is, its timbre, its harmonic coherence, its complexity. Time-series and EEG models capture what a body is doing beneath awareness. Between them, a learned mapping asks a question that sound traditions have asked for centuries and never been able to answer with data: is the body hearing the order in the sound?

Next, it learns you. No two nervous systems settle the same way. The frequency that quiets one body may pass through another unnoticed. With each session, the mirror accumulates evidence of your particular responses, which tones, which combinations, which qualities of sound your body answers. Over time this becomes a personal resonance profile: a map of what your nervous system listens for, discovered from your own data rather than prescribed by any chart or tradition. Your practice stops being generic and becomes yours.

Then, it anticipates. A model that has seen your sessions begins to forecast them. Given your baseline and a tone, it predicts your response trajectory before it fully unfolds, and it notices within seconds when a sound is landing or when it is not. Sessions stop being fixed sequences and become guided ones: the practice adjusts to the body in front of it, not the average of all bodies.

Eventually, it answers back. The horizon is a closed loop: generative audio that listens to your physiology in real time and adapts what it plays, softening here, deepening there, holding a tone the moment your body begins to answer it, the way an accompanist follows a singer. The mirror stops reflecting and starts responding. Not a recording, not a playlist, but a duet between sound and nervous system, composed live, for one listener, once.

Who it serves. A daily practice companion for individuals, showing you what your own practice does. An instrument for sound practitioners and teachers, making visible the work they have always done by ear and intuition. And a research tool for a field rich in tradition and thin in measurement, because once an effect is measurable, it can finally be studied.
